📌About the book
A classic tale of gothic horror. The history of the family in High place is filled with gory, murder, dark atmosphere, mystic settings, untold secrets, sensuality, fantasy, myths and legends captivating the readers instantly.
Personally, I felt this book to be extremely engaging. The palace is in ruins which once took pride in it's grandeur, charm and eloquence. The reader gets a feeling right from the beginning that doesn't seem right yet can't decipher it completely.
📌Plot
Noemi Tabaoda is a charismatic young lady who engages her mind with leisure and husband hunting. Soon she is given a daunting task of going to her cousin's place in return of getting a degree of Masters in anthropology. His father summons her from a party and hands over a disturbing letter written by her cousin, Catalina. His father considering the entire situation to be a case of being overly 'melodramatic' and 'female hysteria' , doesn't want the family name to go in ruins because of a divorce.
Catalina packs her suitcase and sets off making up her mind to prove her worth to his father. Reaching the mansion she finds everything in ruins. The silverware, silky curtains, library filled with rotten books and not a drop of life. The unsaid rule is to be silent all the time, not smoke cigarettes, have a quick shower. The windows are shut stinking of stale air and the people not being welcoming at all.
She meets everyone including Catalina but her visit is bounded by time. Her husband, Virgil appears to be intimidating in front of her. The entire family believes women to be a source of object whose sole job is to give birth. “Loyalty to the family is rewarded, and impertinence is punished. Remember that and you shall be very happy.” Considering mixed races to be inferior by Doyle, this story sets the readers at places full of gloom, horror, bloody tales as the tragedies starts unfolding.
